A Letter For An Aspiring Lawyer

Dear future lawyer,

How are you? I hope you are doing okay. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for having some spare time to read this letter. I know that you have a lot in your hands right now and that you still have some tasks to finish. Whether the same be preparing for today’s recitation or finishing some case digests and term papers, I know that you do not have the luxury to dwell in social media platforms forever. So here I go.

I would like to say that you are doing a good job. If no one has not relayed yet how proud they are of what you keep on doing, let me be the one to tell you so. I am proud of you. You are doing a great job. You are one of a kind. Pursuing further studies in law not only takes guts, brilliance, perseverance, and hard work. It requires a student to focus on the things that matter most and to sacrifice a lot just to earn the degree. Indeed, all your works and efforts are looked at with great value.

You may feel down from time to time. You may feel like everything is all for naught. You may feel like this journey not only makes you feel drained and everything—it makes you feel empty inside and out. Way back when before you entered law school, you were having the time of your life. You were enjoying your undergraduate studies. You were excelling at your work. You were having a great life because you had no problems related to the pursuit of the law.

But by the time you entered law school, everything changed. You became a different person who now prioritizes the spirit and essence of the law. You have given up a lot—from time with your families and loved ones to time with your friends and colleagues, you have looked into your own future and told yourself that sacrifice is necessary.

However, as you go forth and continue your journey to become an esteemed member of the profession, you seldom look back and take a peek at what you have accomplished in the long run. Calm down. Take a breather. Give yourself a break. Today, let me remind you about something—the people you love most are also sacrificing as much as you are.

You may not notice this but the ones who supported you from the very beginning are also sacrificing a lot. They miss you. They miss you so much. They look back at how much you have grown and banner your achievements as if it was theirs as well. They support you when you feel up. They support you when you feel down. They carry with you the burden you always look at as heavy and insurmountable. However, you continue to fight for your dreams. The one thing you do not know is that the people you love the most also help you eliminate the weight of pressure. They are by your side, trying to help you in the little ways they can.

Don’t forget to thank them for the efforts they have done. Don’t forget to recognize their efforts for you to reach your ultimate goal of becoming a lawyer. Don’t forget that these people are with you all the way and that they will continue to be there for you if and when you finally realize your dreams.

And while you are at it, take a breather and appreciate the fact that you have come this far.

In the past, you would only dream of entering law school and eventually trade wits with your fellow dreamers. In the past, you would only fantasize about becoming a member of the legal profession. In the past, you could only imagine yourself in a room among the best legal minds of the country in the near future. In the past, you were just a dreamer.

And look at you now. You have come so far that you have gained a lot of legal knowledge which, by hope and by chance, are enough for you to surpass the Bar and eventually become a lawyer. You have developed into a great mind that appreciates the details of the law. You have now evolved into a person who values the moral and ethical principles of your beloved law school and looks forward to using the same as a tool in further achieving justice for the people. You are slowly becoming an instrument of justice. You are slowly becoming the lawyer you only once dreamed of in the past.

May you always be reminded that while you feel like you are not performing that great in school, you are nonetheless learning a lot. These are not failures but lessons in the process. A subpar mark in an exam means that you need to study more for the next. A missed case or legal concept in a recitation means that you need to expound your readings. A day where you feel like nothing is coming into your mind means that you need to take a break, take a breather, and eventually feel good later in the day and surpass your personal struggles.

The practice and study of law is not for everyone, and you are lucky and blessed to be in your position today. Do not worry so much about the things you cannot control. The study of law will always present external circumstances which are beyond the reach of its students. Take things within stride and focus on the most important factor of law school—yourself.

A bright mind is nothing without a healthy body. A fiery desire for change is nothing if you can no longer move a muscle. Remember that while the study of law is important, your well-being topples the same every time.

It is a good thing that you have breaks in between so that you could read some random articles or letters like this one. It is good that you have a couple of minutes or hours to spare for yourself. Remember that because of what’s happening in today’s time, it is necessary that you stay in good shape and in good health. You must remember that you need to be healthy in order to become an effective instrument of justice and an eventual beacon of hope.

May you always be reminded of these things in life—that matter most in your journey to becoming a lawyer. Remember your loved ones. Remember your purpose. Remember to take care of yourself. Most importantly, remember to look back at what you have accomplished. You did not come this far only to come this far. There is still a lot to be done in order to become a lawyer, and you are always mindful of the same. May you always be blessed with good health and a good life in order for you to achieve your goals. May you always be reminded that whatever you do, whatever may happen, we are always proud of you. Good luck on the remaining paths towards your dream, future lawyer! We will always be here rooting for you and supporting you in whatever venture you wish to take—for as long as it is for the greater good.
